My Broken Mariko
Staff Reviews
This stand-alone volume follows a young woman's efforts to spread her best friend's ashes at sea after her suicide. Flashbacks give us Tomoyo's unfiltered perspective of the terrible abuse Mariko suffered as a child. This is a manga that asks difficult, unanswerable questions: what is the meaning of a life defined by suffering? But the hiccups in Tomoyo's journey offset the tragedy with unexpected black humor, underscored wonderfully by Hirako's expressive figures, which call to mind early-2000s Gainax. Beautiful and heartbreaking.
